United Kingdom and Ireland: pounds sterling or euros?
2 min read

Which currency in which country?
Destination | Currency | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
England, Scotland, Wales | Pound sterling (GBP) | Contactless payment is everywhere |
Northern Ireland (Belfast) | Pound sterling (GBP) | Part of the United Kingdom |
Republic of Ireland (Dublin) | Euro (EUR) | Member of the euro area |
The classic mistake: arriving in Dublin with only pounds, or in Belfast with only euros. The two cities are only about two hours apart by road, but not in the same currency area.
Do you need cash in the UK?
A little. Cards and contactless payment are accepted almost everywhere, including on London's public transit. Still keep a few pounds for small shops, markets and surprises. At the terminal, always choose pounds over Canadian dollars (why?).
Scottish and Northern Irish banknotes
In Scotland and Northern Ireland, commercial banks issue their own pound sterling banknotes. They're worth the same as Bank of England notes and circulate freely in their region, but some shops in England accept them reluctantly. Outside the UK, many exchange offices won't buy them back: spend them before you leave.
Your old paper notes
The Bank of England has withdrawn paper £20 and £50 notes. Shops stopped accepting them on September 30, 2022. Their value isn't lost: the Bank of England still exchanges them, including by post. Polymer notes, including those showing Queen Elizabeth II, remain valid.

What about a large amount?
According to the travel advice for the United Kingdom, you must declare £10,000 or more (or the equivalent) to customs when entering or leaving. In Ireland, the European Union rule applies: €10,000 or more. And when leaving Canada, the CBSA rule applies from C$10,000.
