Travelling to Jamaica: Jamaican dollars or US dollars?
1 min read

What is Jamaica's currency?
The Jamaican dollar (JMD). Unlike the currencies of several nearby islands, it isn't pegged to the US dollar: its rate floats freely. A Jamaican dollar is worth much less than a Canadian dollar, so prices are shown in hundreds or thousands of Jamaican dollars.
Cards and ATMs
According to the travel advice for Jamaica:
hotels and businesses catering to tourists accept major credit cards;
ATMs are limited outside Kingston and Montego Bay.
If you're staying in Negril, Ocho Rios or at an isolated resort, don't count on withdrawing cash when you arrive.
What to bring?
Situation | Our advice |
|---|---|
Hotel, tourist restaurants | Credit card, paid in Jamaican dollars |
Markets, local restaurants, taxis | Jamaican dollars in cash |
Tips, excursions | Small bills (Jamaican or US dollars) |
Backup if a card is declined | A little extra cash |
In tourist areas, prices are often also shown in US dollars. Always ask which currency a price is in before paying, and avoid converting to Canadian dollars at the terminal (why?).
Neighbouring islands

Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for everything in US dollars in Jamaica?
In tourist spots, often. But the merchant's rate is rarely a good one, and small businesses prefer Jamaican dollars.
How much cash should I plan?
Enough for tips, taxis and small expenses, plus a reserve, especially outside the big cities. See our method.
