Selling back foreign currency after a trip: how it works

1 min read

Leftover euro coins and banknotes

Which rate applies?

When you sell us a currency, the sell rate applies: the "Sell" column on our exchange rates page, which is what you receive in Canadian dollars per unit. It's lower than the buy rate; the difference is the counter's margin. See how to read an exchange rate.

What we buy back

  • foreign banknotes in good condition: not torn, stained or written on;

  • not coins, like most exchange offices.

Damaged or withdrawn note? Read what to do with damaged or old banknotes.

Sell back or keep?

Situation

Our advice

You'll be back in the US or Europe within a year

Keep your US dollars or euros

Rare currency or one-off trip

Sell it back

Large unused amount

Sell, or keep some for a next trip

Coins

Spend them before you leave

Every time you buy and then sell back a currency, you pay the spread twice. Keeping currencies you'll use again avoids that loss.

What to bring?

  • your banknotes, kept flat;

  • valid photo ID: we ask for it on every transaction, and the law requires it for any exchange of $3,000 or more (why?).

Where to sell them back?

At our three branches, no appointment needed: Saint-Laurent, Laval and Brossard. You get your money on the spot.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell back currency bought elsewhere?

Yes, if the notes are in good condition and we carry that currency.

Does the sell rate depend on the amount?

Our posted rates are estimates and may vary depending on the amount actually exchanged.
